Deborah Scott, CEO of Georgia STAND-UP, a “think and act tank” for working families, and We Vote We Win, has spent 40 years organizing communities, training activists, protecting voting rights, and building progressive coalitions throughout the South. A 2012 “White House Champion of Change,” she was mentored by stalwarts of the civil rights movement including Revs. Joseph Lowery, C.T. Martin, and James Orange, all close confidants of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. She worked with the legendary John Lewis at the Voter Education Project, and at the City of Atlanta for Mayor Maynard Jackson. A champion of workers rights, Ms. Scott partnered with southern labor unions to found Trade-Up, a prep-apprenticeship program in the construction and energy industries that has been cited as a best practice workforce model by the Department of Labor. The Movement Center, her Atlanta-based headquarters and multi-purpose conference and event facility is a hub for civic engagement and base-building activity across Georgia and the South. The Center houses her Policy Institute for Civic Leadership which has trained over 500 community leaders. Ms Scott is a nationally known advocate for living wages, housing affordability, and transit equity, as well as family supports such as universal healthcare, eldercare, and expanded child services. Ms. Scott's work countering voter suppression is featured in the MSNBC documentary series "Battleground Georgia" produced by Trevor Noah. A graduate of Clark (College) Atlanta University. She is a member of the inaugural Power, Innovation, and Leadership cohort at the Harvard University Kennedy School of Government.
