Sheila Tyson is Commissioner for District 2 in Jefferson County Alabama. The Birmingham native is a former president of the Birmingham Citizens Advisory Board and a former member of the Birmingham City Council. She maintains a reputation as a community leader for the people. She led the Alabama Coalition on Black Civic Participation in its successful pursuit to engage and mobilize the formerly incarcerated population to participate in the 2008 presidential election. She considers it to be her proudest achievement.
Commissioner Tyson is also a member of the National Community Reinvestment Coalition, Neighborhood USA, Birmingham Board of Education Executive Committee, UAB Minority Health & Health Disparities Research. She started a nonprofit called Building Healthy Communities. She is a lifetime AIDS/HIV advocate and studied business accounting at the U.S. Army Quartermaster School.
